Symbols Reframed: A Visual Exploration of Thian Hock Keng’s Decorative Symbols (2025) 3D Animation, Publication, Web Coding

Chinese temples have always captured my attention – not just for their beauty, but for the intricate motifs and layers of symbolism woven into their architecture. Over time, I began to notice echoes of these symbols in everyday objects around me: ancestral items at home, fragments of traditional Chinese architecture, and decorative elements tucked into the corners of familiar spaces. These visual threads sparked a deeper curiosity about their meanings and how they contribute to a broader sense of Chinese identity. This project is an exploration of that curiosity. Drawing inspiration from the rich symbolism and heritage of Thian Hock Keng Temple, my work reinterprets traditional temple motifs through a contemporary lens. It’s a design journey that attempts to bridge tradition and modernity – reimagining cultural symbols as new visual narratives. At its heart, this project hopes to inspire a renewed sense of connection and appreciation among younger generations, encouraging reflection on identity, cultural continuity, and the evolving role of Chinese temple design in our ives today.

Fengshui: Generative Type Exploration (2023)
Computational Coding

AlgoNature: Fengshui is a generative typography concept that combines coding algorithm and nature elements. This mini project delves into the fascinating intersections of traditional Fengshui symbols and ideas with the precision of code algorithms. It goes beyond the pictographic elements by using Chinese characters, where the shape of the character vaguely resembles the element it represented. This exploration aims to generate an audio-visual generative type using sounds. Integrating these sounds into the code algorithms results in a harmonious blend of dynamism and motion, where the characters reflect the deep-rooted connections between humans and their surroundings. It also questions how we can make traditional Chinese characters interesting, and how different character variations are generated by sound.

The artwork on the book jacket delves into the array of emotions experienced by the characters in Dave Chua's 1997 novel, Gone Case. Drawing inspiration from my personal teenage years, which parallel the journey of the protagonist, Yong, the artwork reflects the overwhelming impact of growing up in a dysfunctional family. Loneliness, isolation, and frustration permeate the design, evoking a profound sense of melancholy.Crafting a cohesive narrative from individual letters posed a significant challenge. To overcome this, I envisioned the letters in shades of blue, imbuing them with a wistful nostalgia reminiscent of the familiar neighborhood estate where I spent my formative years. This particular project entailed designing a book jacket for a chosen fictional book as part of a school assignment. It was during my casual perusal of the Singapore Collection at the public library in 2018 that I stumbled upon this captivating book.

ArchiFest 2023: Notes On Time And Spaces (2022)
Computational Coding

This brand identity project pays homage to the local brutalist architecture, drawing inspiration from its distinct forms and structures. By customizing these forms, they have created a series of visuals that will be used as promotional material for a festival. I explored prominent brutalist landmarks in Singapore, such as the Golden Mile Complex and Tower, noting their unique and representative forms from that era.

Through the application of innovative functions and transformations to various vertices, they have developed a dynamic logo that almost resembles a new typeface, constructed with simple codes and functions.

The proposed logo incorporates motion visuals to showcase the potential variations behind each letter, enabling audiences to perceive the interplay between chaos and clarity, reminiscent of brutalist architecture. In line with the project, titled "ArchiFest 2023: Notes on Time And Spaces," the intention is to employ these shapes to represent the concept of time. A secondary visual element incorporates a grid system, inspired by the organizational grids found in brutalist buildings, which can be manipulated across different components of the brand identity. This flexibility allows for the creation of new arrangements that mirror the evolving architectural landscape in Singapore, while also mimicking the formation and movement of both a brutalist building and a clock.

Yayoi Kusama: Turning Trauma Into Art (2023)
Publication

Inspired by how Yayoi Kusama turned her childhood trauma into powerful art, I created a self-published book that weaves in elements from her work. The reflective cover takes cues from her iconic Narcissus Garden (1966), inviting the viewer to literally see themselves in the piece. I chose a bold magenta and green palette to tell a deeper emotional story—magenta for its intensity, love, and pain; green for its sense of healing and renewal. Together, these colours mirror the layered, often conflicting emotions that come with trauma. The result is a visual experience that’s both striking and deeply personal.

When Time Comes To A Halt (2023)
Photography

‘When Time Comes To A Halt’ is a documentary photography series that explores the remnants of an forgotten estate known as Tanglin Halt. This site, formerly a thriving satellite estate, has given way to the inevitability of redevelopment, losing its identity in the process. The series seeks to encapsulate the fleeting essence of this aging estate, that will ultimately fade away with the advent of redevelopment. Every trace of rust, and each fragment serves as a poignant reminder of a once bustling place that has now slipped into obscurity.

The images are meticulously arranged to chronicle the estate’s progression from brightness to darkness in its state of vacancy, aiming to evoke a profound sense of solitude. They capture the metamorphosis of a place once teeming with human activi
